animals. At that time there were very
few alpaca ranches in California and
there were only 3,000 or so alpacas in
the United States. There are now over
70,000 of these lovely creatures and
hundreds of ranches. The Incas valued
them for their fine fiber and only
members of royalty were permitted to
have garments made from their fiber or
fur as it is also called. Alpaca fiber is at
least 5 times stronger and 5 times
warmer than wool and it is great for
those who are allergic to wool.
We now have 25 of these fine noble
creatures and we enjoy the peaceful
lifestyle that goes with them. We are
located in Oakhurst, California which is
about 50 miles north-east of Fresno and
south of Yosemite National park. We are
right off highway 49 at the start of the
Golden Chain highway which goes
through many of the old gold rush
towns of California.
